Getting Started
Here are some helpful tips to guide your use of Farm School!
Moving Back and Forth
As you travel through Farm School you will go to different locations, called "pages." Sometime you may want to return to a page you have already visited. At the top of your computer screen you will see a button marked "BACK." One click on this button will take you back to the last page you viewed. Another click will take you back to the page you visited before that. By clicking on the BACK BUTTON, you can retrace your steps through Farm School.
Next to the BACK BUTTON is another button marked "FORWARD." If you move backwards through the site, clicking on the FORWARD BUTTON will take you to the next page you visited after the one you are at now.
Click once on the BACK BUTTON and then on the FORWARD BUTTON to see what happens.
You'll also find some special images--called icons--that will help you move around Farm School more quickly:
A click on the HOUSE, which appears at the bottom of nearly every page, will take you home to the begining of Farm School.
A click on GO will take you to another page that continues something begun on the current page.Hearing Voices
If your computer has speakers, you can hear people talk about farming at many points in Farm School. These points are marked by a special icon:
When you click on the MICROPHONE, the computer will need a bit of time to find the voice tape and ready it for you to hear. When it's ready, a small screen will appear with several buttons. Click on the PLAY BUTTON (the one with a small arrow pointing to the right) and hear the voice. You can adjust the volume with a knob on your speaker or on the keypad. When the tape is finished, just close the small screen and continue with Farm School.Finding Definitions
We've created a glossary that includes the definitions for many words related to farming that you will find in Farm School. Every word you find in bold type is in the glossary.
A click on the BOOK, which appears at the bottom of nearly every page, will take you to a glossary. All the words are listed in alphabetical order. Just scroll down the page to find the word you're looking for. To get back to the page you were viewing, hit the BACK BUTTON.Special Projects
As you explore Farm School you'll find a variety of projects you can do to test what you know about farming and to learn more. You can do some of these projects in just a few minutes at the computer. Other projects take longer and might be done by several people or by your entire class.
Ideas for special projects are marked by this wheat straw icon. Watch for the wheat straw to find interesting things to do!Printing Pages
You may want to print some of the pages in Farm School to use when you're not at the computer. At the top of your computer screen you will see a button marked "PRINT." One click on this button will reveal a small screen. Click again on "OK" and you will get a copy of the complete file you're viewing on the screen.
