- Gave hope to the U.S. especially during the Depression
- Provides recreation (water-skiing/sport fishing)
- Allowed the population to settle in the West
- Provides all classes with access to electric power
- Provides water in an arid land
NEGATIVE EFFECTS:
- Facilitated urban sprawl
- Denies Native Americans religious freedom
- Encourages development
- Forced some towns to relocate
- Takes away the sacred symbols (found in nature; salmon, land formations) around which Native American cultures are based
- Takes away and limits the ways Native Americans sustain themselves (land taken away)
- Unjustly forced a new way of life upon Native Americans
- Deaths during the construction process
