Kenyon Rocks

Swimming Reunion

Greetings Kenyon Swimmers,

As you know, a small but hearty group of aging swimmers from Kenyon are planning a reunion to celebrate the amazing tradition of competitive swimming at Kenyon and to honor Coach Steen. We hope you will join us. This package of information is the last mailing you will receive from us. From here on in, we will be updating you via e-mail. If you are NOT on our e-mail distribution list and would like to be, please contact Kris Caldwell at caldwellk@kenyon.edu.

Kenyon Swimming has had a long and proud tradition of success. Whether you swam for Jim Steen, Tom Edwards, or Dick Sloan, Kenyon always dominated the conference meets and was motivated by the compelling force of a tradition of excellence. Soon after Coach Steen arrived, Kenyon Swimming began the climb to dominate at the national level, where it remains today.

Under the tutelage of head coach Jim Steen, the Kenyon College swimming and diving team developed into the most successful program in collegiate athletic history.
22 Consecutive NCAA National Championships for the Kenyon Men's Swimming and Diving Team
17 Consecutive NCAA National Championships for the Kenyon Women's Swimming and Diving Team
13 Time Winner of NCAA's Division III Coach of the Year Award
7 Time Winner of the American Coaches Association for Excellence
1994 Recipient of the National Collegiate and Scholarship Swimming Trophy
Coach of over 300 Men and Women All-American swimmers totaling 2,315 All-American Awards since his arrival 1976.

These are the statistics. Whether or not you participated on one of these championship teams, you were part of the tradition of Kenyon Swimming. We want you to be a part of this reunion effort and maybe even be part of a new tradition - the Kenyon Masters national championship team.

This is a "grass roots" effort to honor Coach Steen and reunite with your former teammates. You may participate in a number of ways:
1) Join us in Cleveland…swimming is optional but encouraged. If you're not swimming, come be part of the team on deck and then join us for the party Saturday night.
2) Contribute to our Kenyon Swimming Commemorative Book and "slide show" by sending photographs and/or a note of appreciation for Coach. Your photos will be returned. Please include a SASE for the return of your photos. Send this to: Laura Chase Kessler, 8056 Amber Ln., Brecksville, OH 44141
For electronic files, send them to Laura at: kesslel@bigfiles.ccf.org (please tell her the files are coming at kesslel@ccf.org)
3) We also want to develop a rockin' score for the slide show, so send music suggestions of the hits
from your Kenyon swimming days.
4) The Kenyon Masters web site has all your answers. Book mark its location for easy access: http://www2.kenyon.edu/masters/welcome3.htm. It can also found by going through www.kenyon.edu, "Alumni and College Relations," "Affinity Groups," "Masters Swim Team."

You must still register as a Masters swimmer (Steps 1-6 above). You must also enter the USMS Championship meet as a relay swimmer (Step 5). On the enclosed form we ask you to provide us your relay preferences for the meet. We will require your AGE (for the purposes of this meet, your age is the age you turn in the year 2002), and your 50 METER splits for each stroke you like.

ARE THERE QUALIFYING TIMES FOR NATIONALS?
Yes, and No! You may enter 3 events without qualifying for the National Qualifying Times (NQT's). These times will be posted when the entry form for Nationals becomes available. You may enter 3 additional events if you have met the NQT for that event. The maximum number of individual events a swimmer can enter is 6. Distance swimmers must choose between the 800m and 1500m freestyle events.
