Folk Medicine

Folk medicine is the practice of medicine among family, friends and neighbors in a fairly informal manner. This type of system does not exactly fit into the either the allopathic of holistic category. Practice of folk medicine occurs, for example, when someone who is known to make a tonic or heal a certain condition, is sought out by friends and family to perform this service. Lay practitioners, in this way, are doing something that is related to health care that is characterized by reliance on personal relationships. The knowledge of the practitioner is usually orally transmitted.

Due to time constraints, this study was not able to investigate the prevalence and practices of folk medicine in Knox County. However, it is likely to be an important dimension of health care in this area.
