Falun Gong Stages Large Protest on Tiananmen Square

[CND, 10/26/00] Members of the banned Falun Gong group staged a second protest in October on Tiananmen Square Wednesday, forcing the police to shut down part of the square for over 20 minutes, AP reported.

The members started their protest by throwing leaflets and waving banners in small groups spread throughout the square. Police officers in plain clothes quickly went in to arrest the group members. According to the report, about 100 Falun Gong protesters were taken away in 30 police vans. Some members were beaten by the police.

The protest was against the government's decision to jail group leaders, using an anti-cult law. (Dong LIU, WU Yiyi)
