Falun Gong Follower in Custody Dies: Rights Group

[CND, 06/18/00] SU Gang, a Falun Gong member in police custody, died on June 10 in a mental hospital after given some medication, according to Su's father, AFP reported on Sunday.

Su received daily injection of an unidentified medication for seven days while staying in Changle Mental Hospital in northeastern Shandong province, confirmed Su's family member and a human rights group.

According to the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy in China, Su was a computer engineer with the Qilu Petrochemical Company. He was detained by the police in February but allowed to continue working. On April 25, he ran away from police custody to participate in a demonstration on Tiananmen Square.

The police sent him to the mental hospital on May 23 and released him from the hospital on May 31. According to Su's family, Su could not tell what has happened and lost the ability to eat, move and speak properly after the hospital stay.
