Course Description
This course is a continuation of CHNS 111/112. It is not going to be as intensive, but the expected level of language tasks will be more advanced. You are going to acquire paragraph-level language competency such as narration, description, comparison and etc. Throughout the course, students develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills across the three communicative modes: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. The following are the components of the course:

1. Explanation
The instructor will introduce and explain the content. Content here refers to the communicative tasks and the vocabulary, grammar, and cultural information that are required for accomplishing the communicative tasks specified. The in-class work will be devoted to developing skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

2. Practice
A foreign language is acquired only as a consequence of using that language. The purpose of the practice class is to build each week's new material into an increasingly versatile proficiency. Practice is the most important activity in this course. Every minute is valuable to you. Every class meeting contributes, cumulatively, to the attainment of your personal objective. The practice class (drill sessions) activities are conducted in Chinese and is essential for our success in this course. There are also weekly one-on-one sessions.

3. Dialogue Journal
This is part of the writing exercises. The instructor will communicate with the student in writing (in characters) on anything the student wants to write about: a question about the class, a question about Chinese culture, a question about Chinese food, a comment on teaching and learning, a comment on what is going on around the world, a story you want to share with others ... you name it. The student should hand in the journal every Monday and get it back on Wednesday.

4. Evaluation
Evaluation provides each student multiple opportunities to demonstrate incremental skill development over discrete segments of material. It provides feedback for both teaching and learning. Each unit evaluation is cumulative, including all previous material plus the most recent week's new material.
