Syllabus

What is Statistics?

• Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, and interpreting numerical information.
• What will we be doing this semester? Give me one or two words that immediately come to mind when I say introductory statistics.

Data Collection Activity - Please complete these questions before 9:00 am on Tuesday, January 18

• We will begin analyzing this data on Monday
• I suggest creating a subdirectory on Google Drive for Stat 106, but proper maintenance of your files for this course is your responsibility.

Sampling Activity

• Form groups of 2 or 3 - your choice this time
• Estimate the number of popsicle sticks in the container
• Develop a rule/formula that could be used to estimate the number of M&M's in a large container
• How would we evaluate and compare these various different estimators?
• Discuss sampling variability --- What would you like to happen to the variability in our estimators?

Reading Assignment - Please read Sections 1 and 2 of Chapter 1 for class on Wednesday.
