Syllabus
What is Statistics?
- Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing,
and interpreting numerical information.
- What will we be doing this semester? Give me one or two words that immediately come to mind when I say introductory statistics.
Data Collection Activity - Please complete these questions before 9:00 am on Tuesday, January 18
- We will begin analyzing this data on Monday
- I suggest creating a subdirectory
on Google Drive for Stat 106, but proper maintenance of your files for this course is your responsibility.
Sampling Activity
- Form groups of 2 or 3 - your choice this time
- Estimate the number of popsicle sticks in the container
- Develop a rule/formula that could be used to estimate the number of M&M's in a large container
- How would we evaluate and compare these various different estimators?
- Discuss sampling variability --- What would you like to happen to the variability in our estimators?
Reading Assignment -
Please read Sections 1 and 2 of Chapter 1 for class on Wednesday.
