What is Statistics?
- Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing,
and interpreting numerical information.
Data Collection Activity - Please complete these questions before Noon on Saturday, August 28
- We will begin analyzing this data on Monday
- Do not save R scripts or other files worksheets on the C:\ drive.
- I suggest creating a subdirectory
on Google Drive for Stat 106.
Sampling Activity
- Estimate the number of popsicle sticks in the container
- Develop a rule/formula that could be used to estimate the number of M&M's in a large container
- Use the samples (see handouts) to compute the statistics that the class agreed to use as estimators
- Place sticky notes on a board (one board for each statistic) to estimate the number of M&M's in a large container
- Discuss sampling variability --- How good are our estimators?
Reading Assignment -
Please read Sections 1 and 2 of Chapter 1 for class on Monday.
