What is Statistics?

• Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, and interpreting numerical information.

Data Collection Activity - Please complete these questions before Noon on Saturday, August 28

• We will begin analyzing this data on Monday
• Do not save R scripts or other files worksheets on the C:\ drive.
• I suggest creating a subdirectory on Google Drive for Stat 106.

Sampling Activity

• Estimate the number of popsicle sticks in the container
• Develop a rule/formula that could be used to estimate the number of M&M's in a large container
• Use the samples (see handouts) to compute the statistics that the class agreed to use as estimators
• Place sticky notes on a board (one board for each statistic) to estimate the number of M&M's in a large container
• Discuss sampling variability --- How good are our estimators?

Reading Assignment - Please read Sections 1 and 2 of Chapter 1 for class on Monday.
