Math 192 Homework Assignment #14

1. In both time periods women are clearly the closest to men in the 100m dash. Using Tukey's multiple comparisions (as shown in our powerpoint presentation), compare the 100m performance ratios with the performance ratios for other events. Identify the events that are significantly different than the 100m for both time periods.

2. Using PGA.com and ESPN.com, find out if there is evidence supporting the claim that those golfers who earn more are all around better players. Choose and record which combination of variables give you the strongest correlation to earnings.

3. In class we estimated the regression equation AB/HR = 104 - 4.72 Age + 0.0618 Age^2 for modern day sluggers.  Barry Bonds was born on July 24 1964.  If he were playing this season, estimate what his at-bats per home run ratio would be.

4. Calculate the difference between the top times of males and females in the New York City Marathon from 1971-2008 (see P:\Data\MATH\Hartlaub\SportsStats\NYC_Marathon_Times.MTW). Then using these differences, make a fitted line plot, either linear, quadratic or cubic (whichever one you find is the most accurate), and decide whether the fitted line plot has any significance relative to the data points. If it does, use this line to predict when female marathon runners will begin to outrun male marathon runners.
