Let's Process Milk

Milk processing 1
From Milk: From Cow to Carton

Once the milk arrives at the dairy plant, several tests are run to make sure that the milk is fresh and clean. A visual inspection is done to ensure that there is nothing foreign in the milk, and chemical tests check for the presence of harmful antibiotics. The milk is also checked for the amount of butterfat present. Furthermore, the workers make sure that the milk is below 45 degrees and conduct a smell check for any foul odors that may indicate spoilage. Even if a small sample of milk were bad, it would contaminate the entire milk supply at that dairy plant because all of the milk from the different tanks is mixed together. So you can imagine how important it is for these safety tests to be run and met. The standards for milk purity are set by the United States government so no matter where you drink milk in the country, it should all be of similar quality.
