Basically, pealing consists of a series of patterns strung together. We play one pattern going up the scale three times, and then pick a different pattern going down the scale three times. There is no music. We either memorize the peals or make them up as we go along. Every year, returning Pealers pass on the peals they know to incoming students. Pealing is ideal for anyone who doesn't read music or doesn't feel up to playing a song, as anyone can at least play a simple pattern or even a scale. (Also notice that the names of the notes are written on the levers!)
The big goal each week is to finish playing as close to 5 o'clock as possible without running into the Cambridge Chimes that mark the hour. (If you're ever in hearing range, listen to see how well we do!) The person who finishes invariably gets a round of applause, even if we fail miserably.
