Becky Pogany, Treasurer
Allyson Whipple, Historian
Becca Helton, Webmistress
Bethany Applebaum, Really Cool Person
[later] James Lewis, Ballroom Mascot
***Discussion of our advisor:
-Patrick Gillgan will be one of them
-Professor Spiller(?) - Ksenia will e-mail
-Alternate: Professor Bennett
[Sara arrives, she and Katy banter.]
***SWING/SALSA DANCE, FRIDAY 8-11:30!
-KAD gave us $150
-Ksenia has ordered the sound system with a dual cd player
from Em & Toepher
-Our DJ for this event will be Pete Horan, with help from yours
truly
[DJing is "good fun," as opposed to bad fun, but you
know...]
-The dance is earlier this year so people can go to parties
afterwords if they
want.
[Apparently "Intro to Hedonism" is Friday. Yay, Phi
Kaps.]
[Ksenia comments, "People can go to the dance," then
stops talking. Very
astute. ;)]
-We decide that Papa John's has better pizza than Dominos or
Pizza Hut.
-Katy will call to get pizza -> we will spend $100, get around
15 pizzas (10
cheese, 5 pepperoni)
-We will ask the pizza to arrive around 9:30, because the lesson
will be done
then, and people can then eat before they go party and (potentially)
drink
[Sara almost gets tomatos up her nose, starts giggling uncontrollably.]
[Allyson: "Ballroom: preventing alcohol poisoning."
Katy: "Encouraging people
to dance sober."]
-There will be 2 dance contests - 1 swing, 1 salsa. We will
purchase 4 small
prizes (one for each member of each winning couple for the 2 events)
-We will judge by tapping people out.
-There will be finals, etc. Right now it seems complex to me,
but I'm sure it
will be very simple once we actually get there and just do it.
-Current KCBDC members cannot enter the contest UNLESS you have
just joined
this semester.
***Old members should pay our dues. We shouldn't be lazy (even
though we are).
***On a related note, new members should also pay dues - $10 for
social club,
$15 (just add $5) for competitive team. Pay these to our lovely
treasurer,
Becky Pogany.
[Ksenia eats an onion and freaks out because her breath will
stink. We inquire
about her fears, thinking she will be worried about offending
new people. She
points out she won't actually be dancing with the newcomers because
she is
always teaching and thus cannot usually dance at these lessons.
Therefore, the
only people she'll be dancing with are Sara and I when she is
demonstrating,
so it's all good.]
***Shopping for the dance will take place on Friday @ 3. Ksenia,
Katy, Becky,
Sara, & I will go to K-Mart and Kroger.
[Sara has no classes on Friday. Grr.]
***Becky will pick up 3 purchase orders (Papa Johns, K-Mart, & Kroger)
***We must reserve water coolers fo the dance.
[Sara burps. Apparently, it's a 6. Ksenia, however, says, "I
don't want to
hear it."]
***We might need to buy a new "large party machine."
***The ballroom dresses are in McBride storage. We will look
for other closet
space, as well.
[We are distracted by Kenyon Men.]
[Apparently, Sara is destroying the club by not having her e-mail working.]
[James joins us.]
***Becky will get 3 water coolers for the dance. She will need
to give them
her ID and ensure she doesn't need it for anything that night,
because
apparently it can be painful if your ID isn't there.
***Members of the U of M ballroom team are coming down on Friday.
They will
arrive @ 8 p.m. Where will they sleep?
-Bethany & Ksenia will take 1-2
-Becky's living room
-Sara & Katy's living room
-James's living room?
[Sara says to look hot. I say we shouldn't prostitute ourselves.
No
objectification! James gives me the thumbs-up in response to this.]
***Meeting spot for board meetings, which will be Tuesdays
@ 5:30:
-Small pierce meeting room
- Lower Dempsey
-Gund War room
-We'll let you know for sure when we know.
***Competitions for this semester:
-Cornell - Oct 18-19
-Purdue - Nov 14-16
-Nationals (Ohio Star Ball) - Nov 22-23
-Other competitions? Yale is in December, apparently. [James says,
"Yale is
cool."]
[Pre-school teaker Ksenia tells us to "quietly move your
chairs and go
upstairs," and the meeting is adjurned.]
Members present:
Ksenia - President
Katy - VP
Sara - Comp Coordinator
Yours truly - Secretary
Becky - Treasurer
Becca - Webmistress
Allyson - Historian
Grace - Cool person
***The meeting started with a problem with the room. Philia
apparently has it
reserved, but Catherine Levengood told us we had it reserved.
Hmmm. Katy will
fix this.
***We have an advisor! Ksenia talked to Prof Spiller, and he
signed our form!
-He came to our dance on Friday (yay!), and according to Ksenia,
"Apparently,
he did a little bit of dancing back in the day."
-We still need to talk to Patrick Gilligan to see if he'll be
co-advisor.
-We need to tell Prof Blick "she's off the hook."
***The Illinois competition is over October break, so we're not going.
***INAUGURAL BALL => we will teach a 2 Latin lessons on
Friday, October 24.
-Salsa or merengue (not samba -- too intense for beginners)
-Same weekend - Columbus Star Ball at Igor's studio
[Sara burps again, apparently it's only a 3.
Ksenia: "There are things we can do at every meeting. I'd
prefer if burping
was not one of them."]
***Fees are due October 8th for Cornell (more details later)
Becky is all over it.
***DUES ARE DUE TODAY, YO!!! PAY BECKY NOW!!!! [she lives in
Aclands 103A]
$10 social club, $15 competitive team
***Old club members need to renew their USABDA membership
-We will also work on getting new team members registered.
***Swing/Salsa Dance - This went well.
-We need to do the Fun Funds form.
***Video Igor lessons?
[I don't know if this went down or not, because I was being held
prisoner in a
tower all Wednesday night.]
-All are welcome to come to Igor lessons. They are geared towards
the comp
team and are a bit faster-paced, but there is much to be learned.
***Dance Studio - there are auditions for the Fall Dance Concert
next week, so
we might not be able to use the studio after that because they
might need to
have rehearsals in there.
***NO BALLS!! David & JP - this means you!!!
-Girls will take care of the balls from now on.
***We will buy video tapes at Walmart - K will do, then pay
difference for
dues.
-Less wasting of checks this way
***Purdue, Nationals look good.
***No Case Western Comp again this year. Apparently, they asked
Ksenia to
organize it, so we know how on top of things they are. (eyeroll)
[New plan - we want to get the school to pay for us to fly
to the competition
in Palm Beach. Hey, they paid for the chess team to fly last year!]
***We need to talk seriously right now.
=>Do we want to do a competition this year?<=
-It would be in April
[Becky has a laughing fit because there is something gross in
her peach.]
-we would need a program to register online
-Sara knows someone who wrote one
-We could seduce Tris to get him to help [Becky: "I love
this club]
[K will not waste a year of her life in Mount Vernon after she
graduates.
Places she could work if she stayed: Walmart, K-Mart, Kroger,
CVS, Wendy's,
the Coin Laundry & Tan place]
[At this point in the meeting, Katy tries to exit the room
to go to the
restroom, but immediately dives back in, screeching. There is
a bat flying
around the front stairwell of Peirce and swooping through the
second floor. I
then attempt to find the nearest phone I know of so I can call
Security. I run
across the hall to the BSU lounge, where, unbeknownst to me, there
is a BSU
meeting in progress. What follows is a transcript of the events:
---Begin transcript---
(Taryn knocks on the door)
(BSU member opens door, looks annoyed)
Taryn: Hi, can I use your phone?
BSU member: Um, we're kind of trying to have a meeting here.
Taryn: I just need to call Security really quickly, because there
is a bat
flying around out here.
(The bat conveniently decides to swoop right behind me at this
point in time,
as if to illustrate my point in case they didn't believe me)
Other BSU members in the background: Taryn! Come in, come in!
(Door is closed behind me, I run over to use the phone, apologizing
profusely)
Taryn: Sorry, sorry, guys, I'll make this quick
James Lewis (BSU president): Oh, Taryn (in that James way. You
know what I
mean)
(Taryn picks up the phone, dials Security)
Switchboard: Kenyon College
Taryn: Hi, I'm in Peirce, and there's a bat flying around the
front entry way
(no answer)
Taryn: So I was just hoping maybe you all could come out and take
care of it.
(long pause)
Switchboard: We'll see what we can do.
Taryn: Thanks.
(I then exit the room, once again apologizing profusely for interrupting
the
meeting. At the door, I do a "bat check" before running
across the hall, back
to the Peirce meeting room.)
---End transcript---
When I return, I am informed that the other board members closed
the door
while I was gone, but then were worried about me being able to
get back in.
Some suggested I would likely knock. Ksenia apparently was worried
that it
might be the bat, not me. When someone pointed out that the bat
couldn't
knock, K replied "Watch that bat flap it's wings!" with
hula-like arm
gestures.
--Herein ends the saga of the flying mammal in Peirce Hall. We
now return to
our regularly scheduled minutes.]
***Back to Competition stuff. Things we would need [Becky writes
these on the
chalkboard that is conveniently located in the room for us, even
though it is
apparently "The worst chalkboard in the world"]:
-registration
-judges - IGOR, Svetlana, their "judge buddies"
-Housing - club members, hotels -> Kenyon Inn, Holiday Inn
-DJ
-Venue
-Prizes - ribbons & trophies
=>A LOT of $$$$$$ - apparently, there is a chunk of money somewhere
for fun
athletic events. We need to get on top of this.
-Showcase - Igor & Svetlana, Barbara & Pavil, the kids
who cry every time they
dance
-food, water
-MC - Igor or Pete
-Need whole club to be involved
-Safety pins
-invigilator & scrutineer
-numbers
-program
We will check out the money situation and ask Igor about this,
then reassess
This is a stretch, and we acknowledge that.
Who would come?:
-U of M
-Case
-OSU
-Toledo
-Purdue
-Notre Dame?
-Others?
***Cornell - we need housing. Annie Weinheimer? KCN Bed & Breakfast?
***OSB/Nationals - housing:
-Matt's family
-OSU people
-Evan (Allyson's boyfriend)
-Kenyon people from Columbus
-Hotels (last resort)
[Grace says, "I have more hook-ups for ballroom dancing."
No, she didn't mean
THOSE kinds of hook-ups. But it's still amusing.]
Meeting is adjourned.
A pre-meeting quote for everyone's enjoyment:
"RFoC: Real Food Ohhh Garlic!" - Becky
Personages in attendence:
Ksenia
Taryn
Becky
Becca
Grace later
Katy laterer
***There was another conflict with the room, so K went down
and printed off
the schedule to prove that we do indeed have it reserved. Yay
for her!
**Update: We now have 2 advisors -- both have been talked to
& confirmed:
-Luce Assistant Professor in Asian Music & Culture Henry Spiller
(what a fun
title!)
-Director of Counseling Services Patrick Gilligan (yay for our
second
advisor!)
***We need to give the SAC a list of all our members by the
end of the month.
-If you do not pay, you will be removed from the dis-list (this
includes
returning members!!!)
-Special exceptions to this include alumns and "special people"
(aka Robbie,
James, Bryan, & Mike)
***Why are people leaving?
-Homework is starting up
=> We'd just like to point out that you don't have to come
to every rehersal.
Just come when you can, we'd love to have you any time!
-If you have schedule conflicts and you want to compete, talk
to Ksenia.
***Club captains meeting - K went to
-If you are going to compete, you will have to fill out a form.
-K needs to make more copies.
-We apparently will have to do a group form for every comp we
go to.
[Ksenia has her comps this Saturday! Wish her luck!]
[Just for the record, there's garlic in the aspargus as well
as the potatos
tonight. Hence "Real Food Ohhh Garlic."]
***Sara & Ksenia need to get CPR certified.
***K talked to Emily Mountain-Geiger in the athletic dept about
funds for the
competition. Apparently she knew nothing. We will continue to
look into this
and also find out Saturdays in April when Ernst will be available.
***Monday Sept 22 is the Leader Reception from 4-5:30 in Peirce Lounge.
[Katy arrives, she & Grace leave to get food.]
***T-shirts: Ballroom => "This is not a democracy."
or "Vertical Expression of
a Horizontal Desire."
[I updated my ballroom officer's dis-list today. It was from
when Matt McCaw
and Bethany were officers. Why I never updated this, I don't know.]
[Katy officially hates RFoC again.
Grace: What's a pirates favorite dining service? Aaarrrrr FoC!
Also, Friday is National Talk Like a Pirate Day.]
***Back to T-shirts => top 10? Aaaay! Chalupa! Heuapa!
***Katy says we do indeed have the room reserved.
***We should write a constitution.
=>Taryn needs to contact someone from MUN for help with this.
***Our big dance is December 6.
[K tried to go to the KAD meeting today about this, but Joeseph
told her not
to come, so he made fun of her.]
***We talk about the Counseling center. The meeting is adjurned.
As K leaves,
she sticks her head out the door and says "Bats? Bats? No
bats!"
Another random note for the night: I am not James Lewis. Glad
we cleared that
up. And for the record, as well, as much as James might wish it,
I am not now
nor will I ever be a man.
We got the room on time this week, but it smelled odd.
According to Becky, "It stinks like a stinky person."
K is socializing. We are not surprised [we love you, K! :) no worries!]
Present on time:
Sara
Katy
Becky
Your friendly neighborhood secretary
Allyson
Becca
Kelly Smallwood
A few minutes late:
Grace
Alaina (Yay!)
At 6:09 pm, Ksenia arrives. She apologizes, but is slightly
confused about the
song we were singing when she entered.
[Grace's ring smells like peanut butter.]
After running over the agenda, K decides to sit down.
She makes sure everyone knows each other, since we had more people
than usual
this week (yayayay!). We all do. Katy hears "cheddar"
instead of "each other"
for some reason.
***Dance for Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October)
[Random interlude:
Ksenia - "I'm foreign, leave me alone."
Alaina - "You're for it?" (she thought K meant she was
for Breast Cancer)
Ksenia - "And they say I can't speak English."]
-This is not going to happen because October is booked.
1st weekend = too soon
2nd weekend = October Break
3rd weekend = Cornell
4th weekend = Inauguration/Inaugural Ball [and my COMPS! GRRRR]
5th weekend = Family Weekend/Halloween
-We'd like to, but we can't.
AHHH COMPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(comps means two things in this club... hmmm...)
***Copies
-needed of the health forms because we are a club sport
-Kelly will take care of this because she works at the SAC and
she is cool.
***Events form
-we will fill this out when we know competition and practice schedules
for
sure.
[Katy calls Jody Vance just "Vance." Grace says, "Darth
Vance?"]
***Kelly's e-mail
-She e-mailed a Kenyon alum she randomly found online => Jennifer
Mizenko
-Jennifer teaches Alexander technique
-She would love to come here for a Friday-Saturday workshop!
-We would have to pay for airfare, Kenyon Inn
-We really want to sponsor this
-Second semester
-Ask BFC, Dance dept, Fun funds, Colloquium, Student Lectureships
(??) for $$$
-YAY!
-She's excited, we're excited
-This will present a more professional side of us to the campus
[Alaina leaves to prepare for a presentation. She and Grace
have a "system" so
they don't lock each other out. The system: have keys.]
***We need to get competition dates for second semester. We
will most likely
not have our competition this year so we can have Jennifer Mizenko
come
instead.
***Scrimmage! => Full costume social dance-ish event
-not a comp
-invite other teams
-all switch around, dance w/other partners
-purpose: get campus involved, have fun/entertain selves
-Igor lesson
-[we could dump glitter on people instead of Gatorade, apparently]
-Structured social dance
-Look, we're athletes.
-Goofy prizes
-Dance cards?
-Afternoon/evening
-All-campus party after that??
-Exhibition by Igor & Svetlana
***Scheduling => Igor tomorrow
[I vent about the Collegian. I'm done now. That feels better.]
-Gund Commons is open on Mondays. Katy will schedule practices
9-12
-We'll unschedule Wednesday in Gund, since we don't use it then
-Schedule: Dance studio 9-11 Sunday??? => Not yet, at least
["She's foreign" - Grace about Ksenia
"Yeah, she's foreign" - Ksenia about Ksenia]
***I will be cutting down the dis-list soon. If you haven't
paid your dues, do
so, or you will be removed from the list. ["Special people,"
don't freak out,
this doesn't mean you. And no, JP, you don't count as a "special
person" in
this case.]
***Video camera - all who want it have seminar, so K will get it. Sigh.
***Cornell
-housing??
-partners??
-registration fee = $20
-we must register before October break
-Kelly has "timed out," apparently, so she can do newcomer.
-We will ask if low bronze girls can lead newcomer or if guys
can dance
multiple levels.
[Katy and Kelly leave. Katy has her own salad dressing.]
We talk about partners for awhile.
***Does anyone have Steve from Case's e-mail?
[Allyson leaves]
[We talk about nude modeling.]
---mtg is adjourned---
Present and accounted for:
Allyson
Becca
Taryn
Becky
Sara (not Taryn)
Ksenia (late because of Greek Council madness)
***Come see Katy eat 2 pieces of pie and die in the pie-eating
contest tonight
(Wednesday) at 6 p.m. in Peirce [or Allyson as Katy, wink wink,
nod nod]
[Ksenia is exhausted because of the field day.]
[Allyson doesn't like rice or corn. Only wheat.]
***CORNELL
- the housing people are just waiting for us to tell them what
we need
[tournament is a good word, apparently]
- vans will leave @ 3 @ the very latest
- there will probably be 2 vans - one early, one late
[Allyson has a tendency to hit inanimate objects when she drives.
She, Katy,
and I bond over this previously unknown shared trait.]
--> Forms NEEDNEEDNEEDNEED to be done (USABDA form, Release
form,
registration)
- Sunday we will have a meeting about Cornell after social practice.
- Monday, bring your $$ registration fee and we will do the forms
- Need to get drives certified - Encourage it, yo - 10 people
need to do
[We banter about meaninglessly irrelevant stuff for awhile]
- As soon as we have a rough # of the people going, we need to
reserve vans
--> every night this week, work on figuring out partnerships!!
--> Turn in disclaimer forms MONDAY OR YOU ARE NOT GOING TO
CORNELL!!!!
- these forms go on file with the college
- @ Cornell, you can dance open if you dance gold
- girls can lead the adjacent level, but only dance 1 level per
dance
- we will have a dress up day/dress rehersal to try on costumes
the Monday
after October Break
- If you can't be there, we'll have a dress rehersal the next
day (Tuesday
after Oct Break) from 8-9 (before social practice)
Anyway, moving on...
***K will get the video camera for Igor tomorrow
***Parents Weekend:
We will do something Saturday morning/afternoon (1-2 p.m.) - Nov.
1st
-Short demo
-Foxtrot lesson
-Word
***Old members should go to social practice.
-EVERYONE should go to social practice so they can learn American
-Everyone can use both practices
[We all leave to go see James and the Nuge bravely combat the
really
attractive British men... Kudos to the home team for the best
Kenyon showing
yet! :)]
***Minutes, 10/7/2003***
In attendance:
Sara
Katy
Taryn
Becky
Becca
Allyson
Ksenia
Alaina
Grace
[Allyson's inner child is 10. Katy's is 7. Becky's is a kitten. Mine is narf.]
[Ksenia arrives a bit late, Becky thinks her wrap is a giant pickle.]
[K is tired. She should sleep. (Later note - I hope she got to over break!)]
***Inaugural Weekend
- Friday, October 24
- 2 sessions
- We're teaching Latin dances (Mambo/Salsa, Cha-Cha, Meurengue,
or
something...)
- 1:30-3:30 (2 1-hr sessions)
- K will teach. If anyone else wants to attend, that would be
super.
- The description from the program:
"Learn Inaugural-Ballroom Dancing
Leader: Kenyon College Ballroom Dance Club
Length: 1 hour
Learn some Latin dance steps to try out at the inaugural ball
with Kenyon's
award-winning Ballroom Dance Club."
- Darn straight we're award-winning. :)
***Parents Weekend
- we were having room problems, but Katy e-mailed and got it all
figured out.
- I'm assuming it's back to the normal schedule, 1-2 in the ballroom
Sat Nov 1
[Narf!]
[Alaina is no longer a part of this club, apparently, because
she didn't say
"no." I'm as confused as you are.]
[We talk about defenistration.]
[There's a burn on Becky's arm from funnel cakes. Our club is not liable.]
***Cornell
- registration was pending, now is not. Now it is in.
- no problems with housing :)
***Yay for people getting certified to drive!
- NOTE - If you do not have a licence, if you've never driven
on the freeway,
or you have received an inordinate amount of traffic violations,
you are NOT
responsible for getting certified. [Or, as K says, "Don't
get your @$$
certified!"]
[K says, "You guys are losers! Stop!" I don't remember why.]
***Issues of confidentiality --> keep it that way!
[I'm confused by this. So are a lot of people. We're told that's
good.]
- Issues discussed at the meeting but not put in the minutes are
the meeting's
concern.
***Storage space - we are looking into
[Katy talks about building apples out of bricks.]
***We're going to start looking into funding for our 2nd semester
event.

Becky, treasurer
Alaina, the Napkin-Getter (official new office)

[Alaina: "Becky's on everyone's agenda."]
[We complain about parking tickets.]
***Secret talk (shh!) - Project Burrito [for JP, who complained
about the
title of "Project Chalupa" last year]
-Becky and Sara are genuises
[Alaina bites my shoulder. That's hot.]
***We're working the check out for Igor.
***PEOPLE NEED TO PAY ATTENTION to Igor or Ksenia or whoever
is teaching.
-To not pay attention is rude and a waste of EVERYONE'S time and
money, not
just your own.
-Do your part to prevent the Ksenia hoppy things.
***If you want to come to practice but have work to do, we
are cool with you
bringing work to do on the sidelines (except for during Igor lessons)
[Sara steals my potato, dips it in Alaina's ketchap, and eats
it. Feel the
love.]
***Katy got trip ticks for Cornell, Ksenia will also get.
-Other AAA members can aso go get
-Mapquest is evil.
[K and Sara collect food from the rest of the table.]
**Ooh! Ksenia is excited! Security got a box of new Verizon
cell phones that
are silver with blue lights.
***All 26 people have housing for Conrell.
[Pavil is Ksenia's favorite person ever.]
[BUMP someonelikesyou.com]
[If anyone needs to cry, invite K over. She bought "Dangerous Beauty."]
***Check out the U of M ballroom team's website:
http://www.umich.edu/~umbdc/team/intro.htm
http://www.umich.edu/~umbdc/
***And while we're at it, here's a link to Igor and Svetlana's
website:
http://www.igorandsvetlana.com/home.htm
***We decided we need a link on our website that says: if you
want to donate
money or men, click here [or as Becky said, "donate manflesh"]
[Ksenia has trouble with manflesh and hides in her sweater.]
[Meeting dissovles into meaningless gossip.]
Here: Allyson, Katy, Taryn, Sara, Grace, Becky, Ksenia, Alaina (late)
[Becky had the biggest wedgie. Then it was fixed.]
[Katy: "Today is a slouching day."
Grace: "Your mom is a slouching day."]
***Jay is writing the ballroom article this week. We want a
box.
-We discuss being the "dancing Lords and Ladies"
[Allyson: "Dude, it's like 9 ladies dancing and 10 lords
a leaping."
Becky: "It's like 9 ladies dancing and 1 lord a leaping."]
[The new apples (locally grown!) are really good.]
***We need to get pics to Jay.
[Becky: "Speaking of something other than Brian."]
[The Napkin-Getter arives! :)]
***Vans: fill up when under 1/2 tank
-if you have to put in own $$, do $5-10 worth

Alaina (late-er)
JP (late-er-er)
***Parents weekend

I guess "flashy" would be a better word)
- teach parents foxtrot
- Sara will use "the big foof"
[Alaina: "What? David's wearing a dress again?"]
- Exhibition discussion:
~David & Sara & the foof - Tango & foxtrot
[Katy has a worm in her apple. Oops, only not. Katy and Grace
spend the
remainder of the meeting playing with the apple on a knife.]
~Swing - originally we said just newbies, but now everyone
~rumba - everyone
[Katy is doing her part.]
~tango - just newbies
[Katy waves a knife during an argument with Sara. Watch out for
the redheads,
man.]
~chacha = everyone
[Ksenia: "So you want to play like a salsa or something so
everyone can just
