Assignment 8

I. Read the four on-line assignments. The first is an excerpt from the Christian bishop Ignatius of Antioch, who died as a martyr in Rome between 98 and 117. The second excerpt is by Martin Luther, and was written in 1522 as a reflection on Paul's letters to the Romans. The third is by Augustine, a 4th century Christian bishop, and the last excerpt is from a group of writings on liberation theology written in the 1980's.

II. All four accounts contain ideas about the way Christians should live in the world. They also look to the founder of their tradition, Jesus, as a model to follow. What is important to them about Jesus? What's their vision of the Christian life? How engaged should Christians be in "this world"? Choose two of the writings that intrigued you the most, and discuss with your study partner some of the implications of their models.

III. Write up your results in a 1-2 page typed paper.
