Religious Studies 260 Discuss the role of ethics in Buddhism, making reference both to the "precepts" or vows that are taken by monastics and laypeople and more general ethical questions. The latter should include the motivation for ethical behavior in Buddhism, criteria of ethical behavior, and the relationship of the ethical dimension to the other major dimensions of the Buddhist path, i.e. wisdom (doctrines) and concentration (meditation). Follow the Paper Format Guide on the course website, under Handouts. If you use only assigned course readings you do not need a bibliography, but you do need precise citations.
