Grading: The grade will be calculated based on 6 components:

Daily Homework Assignments 10% of the final grade
Roller Coaster Project 10% of the final grade
Class Participation 10% of the final grade
First Midterm 20% of the final grade
Second Midterm 25% of the final grade
Final Exam 25% of the final grade

Test dates

First Midterm Friday, February 9
Second Midterm Wednesday, April 4
Final Exam Monday, May 7 from 6:30-9:30

Daily Homework Assignments: Practice is a primary component of the mathematical learning process; thus homework problems will be assigned on a daily basis. You will turn in all of the assigned problems. I will grade a representative sample of the problems; complete solutions will be posted on line so that you can check answers for problems that I don't grade.

No late assignments will be accepted.  

The two lowest homework grades will be dropped before the calculation of the final homework average. In addition, assignments that are not turned in due to illness or other unexpected absences will be dropped if the absence is excused. If you have advance notice that you will be absent (whether or not the absence is excused) I expect you to make arrangements to turn in the assignment early or to have someone turn it in for you. (For example, sporting events, your sister's wedding, religious holidays, etc.)

Class Participation : Everyone is expected to participate in the work of the class. In order to participate, you must, of course be present; in particular, regular class attendance is expected. See the attendance policy below. In addition, you are expected to be prepared for class by completing the reading assignments before coming to class. In class, I will expect you to participate actively by asking good questions and responding to questions asked of you.

Attendance policy: For each unexcused absence, will deduct 1% of your course grade, up to the class participation total of 10%. Absences beyond this may lead to expulsion from the course. (But, of course, this is all moot, since you will all be present every day!)

Tests: You will have two major tests during the semester and a final exam. The second test will cover mostly the material which has been covered since the first test. However, you will be responsible for all the material covered in the course in as much as it relates to the topics being tested. The final Examination will be a cumulative three hour final held at the time specified by the registrar.

Academic Honesty: I encourage you to work together on homework assignments, but I expect every piece of work that you turn in ultimately to be written by you. You will be expected to maintain the usual standards of giving credit where credit is due by letting me know if you worked with a fellow student (there is no penalty for this, it is just academic honesty) or got information from another source.

Disabilities: If you have a physical, psychological, or learning disability that may impact your ability to carry out assigned course work, feel free to discuss your concerns in private with me, but you should also consult the Office of Disability Services at 5453. The Coordinator of Disability Services, Erin Salva (salvae@kenyon.edu), will review your concerns and determine, with you, what accommodations are appropriate. (All information and documentation of disability is confidential.) It is Ms. Salva that has the authority and the expertise to decide on the accommodations that are proper for your disability. Though I am happy to help you in any way I can, I cannot make any special accommodations without proper authorization from Ms. Salva.
