Math 192 Homework Assignment #10

Presentation Exercises

Wild Card

1. In 2001 the Mariners set a record with 116 wins. Simulate their playoff run using the probabilities given below. (Remember the ALDS is best out of 5 games and the ALCS and World Series are best out of 7 game series.)

Prob (#1 win DS) = .643

Prob (#1 win CS) = .555

Prob (#1 win WS) = .555

2. In 1995, the first year after the Wild Card was instituted, a memorable series occurred between the Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees. Ken Griffey Jr. scored from first base on Edgar Martinez's two-run double off Jack McDowell in the 11th inning to complete an 0-2 series comeback against the Wild Card New York Yankees. Simulate this series 5 times and report the outcome using the probability below. (Division Series is best out of 5)

Prob (Wild Card DS win) = .571

Big Ten versus SEC

  1. Using the data from the past 10 years of BCS bowl play, find how much significantly better the SEC has been compared to the other conferences using a 2 proportion Z-test at 95% confidence, testing p(1)-p(2) with p(1) being the SEC and p(2) being the other respective conferences. Only compare conferences with at least 10 appearances. Fill in column C6 in the minitab project homeworkquestions.MPJ which also has all the other data. Finally, using this test would you say the SEC has been truly dominant? Why or why not?
  2. Using the information given in the minitab project, create your own quantitative index scoring system in order to rank the conferences based on BCS bowl play over the past ten years. Include your formula and results.
