Yeah, the picture is over 10 years
old now, but I still like it.

"Mathematical Logic has been disowned by many logicians on the plea that its interest is mathematical, and by many mathematicians on the plea that its interest is logical" -- A.N. Whitehead, Universal Algebra

"To the world at large, the logician, with his sea-green eyes and never-smiling mouth, appears just another arid academic; but among the heartbruised mathematicians, he is the Iceman, always and forever. The air chills whenever he enters the mathematicians' lounge. His message is always the same, and it is always one of reproof."  -- David Berlinski, A Tour of the Calculus

"Be happy in your work." -- Aunt Peach

If I were a Springer-Verlag Graduate Text in Mathematics, I would be Saunders Mac Lane's Categories for the Working Mathematician.

I provide an array of general ideas useful in a wide variety of fields. Starting from foundations, I illuminate the concepts of category, functor, natural transformation, and duality. I then turn to adjoint functors, which provide a description of universal constructions, an analysis of the representation of functors by sets of morphisms, and a means of manipulating direct and inverse limits.
