The Speech of Socrates

"I just don't know if I can follow such an eloquent and moving speech by the monster of Frankenstein.  But, I suppose I shall try.  Do you agree, monster, that we invited you to this symposium?"

The monster nodded.

"And do you agree that we would not ask you to be here unless we accepted you, despite your grotesque appearance, for the abilities of your mind?"

The monster nodded again.

"And do you also agree that it meant something to you to discuss love so much that you came out of hiding and sat in a public place open to shame and insult?"

Another nod, this one accompanied by uncontrollable sobbing.

"Then I see no reason for your incessant ramblings about why your life is meaningless.  You say that your life is empty.  I contest through my own reasoning that it is only half empty.  There is meaning in your life but you refuse to see it because there are too many tears in your eyes.  And couldn't half empty just as soon be half full if you chose to see it that way?  If you command it to be that way?  If you learn to think like that, you will be completely self-sufficient.  You do not have to rely on others for a fulfilling existence.  I believe intellect is all that matters in the world.  Behold the power of the mind!  I constantly lose myself in deep thought.  Sometimes I will stare into oblivion, contemplating life and I won't even notice that it's been raining on me until some kind soul tells me they can see right through my toga..."
