Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

These fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education to support languageand area study. One applies for them when applying for the programs to which they are attached, and the people running those programs determine who gets the awards. They are available only to US citizens. They may involve both tuition and fees as well as a stipend. Here are some links to give you an idea about what is available. These are just examples, however. If you apply for graduate study in an area studies program, be sure to ask if there are FLAS awards available.
