Unless noted, all workshops are free, open to the public and will meet at the Education Center at the Brown Family Environmental Center on Laymon Road  - for questions, details concerning a particular event, or to register for sessions, call the BFEC office at 427-5050.

 

Community Series

 

Friday, March 19, Friday, April 16, and Friday, May 21, 8:00 - 9:30 p.m.  Spring Sky, with Associate Professor of English Timothy Shutt and BFEC Program Director Jason Larson.  Come and admire the season’s constellations as you listen to mythological stories about the stars.  If the weather is cloudy, the event will have to be rescheduled.

 

Saturday, March 13, 7:30 a.m., Saturday, April 10, 7:30 a.m., and Saturday May 15, 22, and 29, 7:00 a.m.  Birds & Breakfast Spring Migration Bird Hikes. Join the BFEC staff, Kenyon faculty and student managers as we explore the BFEC property and Kokosing Gap trail in pursuit of resident and migrating bird species.  Following our morning hike, participants may choose to join us for a delicious breakfast at a local restaurant.  Bird lists will be provided. No registration necessary.

 

Saturday, March 20, and Saturday, April 3, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.  Vernal Pool Excursions.  Join BFEC Program Director Jason Larson on a series of hikes designed to uncover the mysteries of the BFEC’s vernal pools.  No registration necessary.

 

Sunday, April 4, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Invasive Plant and Habitat Restoration Workshop.  Join the BFEC staff, student managers and volunteers as we learn about invasive plants, their impact on the environment and how to eradicate them from the landscape.  Participants may spend all or part of the day exploring the many different aspects of this informative, “hands-on” workshop.  Call the BFEC for details!  Registration required!

 

Sunday, April 18, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.  BFEC Volunteer Work Day: Spring Cleaning!  Spring is officially here!  Join the BFEC staff as we help you learn how to prepare your gardens for the new growing season.  In addition to the gardens, we will be cleaning the rest of the property as well.  Participants may assist with trail maintenance, removal of accumulated natural debris and other activities.  Snacks and beverages will be provided for participants, as well as an evening, appreciation cookout.  Registration is required.  Please call 427-5053 to register.   

 

Saturday, May 1, 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.  Earth Day!  Join us for an exciting day filled with programs, exhibitors, live animals, games, art, music, food and fun.  Events will take place all day at Gund Commons (Kenyon College Campus at the corner of Gaskin Avenue and East Brooklyn Street.)  Rain or shine!  No registration necessary.

 

Friday, May 21, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  BFEC Graduation Open House!  Come visit the BFEC Education/Visitor’s Center, Farmhouse and Aviary Complex.  Enjoy the display gardens, take a stroll through the tallgrass prairie or take a hike on one of our many trails.  Tours of the BFEC property and general nature hikes will take place throughout the day.  Call 740-427-5050 for a detailed itinerary of events throughout the day. 

 

BFEC Tuesday Morning Bird Walks.  8:00 – 9:30 a.m., every Tuesday of each month (March 23 – May 4) during Kenyon’s spring semester.  What’s that?  You can’t attend our weekend walks?  No problem!  Join BFEC Student Manager Jesse Lasky and local birding enthusiasts for a series of morning bird excursion around the BFEC property.  Meet at the BFEC farm house parking lot.
