Jil Weinstock: Apparitions

November 6 - December 13, 2008

Jil Weinstock, Group Portrait, 2007-08, rubber, vintage clothing

Artist talk: Thursday, November 13, 7:30 pm
Olin Auditorium
Reception follows in the gallery

Jil Weinstock’s minimalist, feminist-influenced cast rubber pieces echo the folds, color and ephemerality of clothing.  Exploiting fundamental flaws in the logic of fashion, Weinstock's works, often collaged with women’s vintage garments, explore the substantiality and insubstantiality of dress.  The artist's translucent, brightly-hued fabric and dresses stretched over light boxes, and her linear shelves of slick, men’s work shirts seem, in part, a comment on retail display and consumer choice.

Represented by Charles Cowles Gallery, New York, Jil Weinstock has exhibited at Catharine Clark Gallery, San Francisco; Caren Golden Fine Art, New York; The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco.
