Ic wiht geseah     wundorlice

I saw a wonderful creature carrying

hornum bitweonum     huþe lædan,

Light plunder between its horns.

lyftfæt leohtlic,     listum gegierwed,

Curved lamp of the air, cunningly formed,

huþe to þam ham     of þam heresiþe;

It fetched home its booty from the day's raid

walde hyre on þære byrig     bur atimbran,

5

And plotted to build in its castle if it could,

5

searwum asettan,     gif hit swa meahte.

A night-chamber brightly adorned.

Ða cwom wundorlicu wiht    ofer wealles hrof,

Then over the east wall came another creature

seo is eallum cuð    eorðbuendum,

Well known to earth-dwellers. Wonderful as well,

ahredde þa þa huþe     ond to ham bedraf

It seized back its booty and sent the plunderer home

wreccan ofer willan--    gewat hyre west þonan

10

Like an unwilling wanderer. The wretch went west,

10

fæhþum feran,     forð onette.

Moved morosely and murderously on.

Dust stonc to heofonum,  deaw feol on eorþan,

Dust rose to the heavens, dew fell on earth--

niht forð gewat.     Nænig siþþan

Night moved on. Afterwards no one

wera gewiste     þære wihte sið.

In the world knew where the wanderer had gone.
